Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about account management and security

What is Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and why is it required?

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) enhances account security by requiring multiple verification methods - something you know (password) and something you have (mobile device). PSU has implemented MFA as the default security measure for all Microsoft 365 services to protect against unauthorized access, even if your password is compromised. This system uses Microsoft Authenticator app for secure, passwordless authentication using biometrics or PIN verification.

How do I set up Microsoft Authenticator for MFA?

To set up Microsoft Authenticator for your PSU account:

  1. Download Microsoft Authenticator from App Store (iOS 14+) or Google Play Store (Android 8.0+)
  2. Visit http://email.psu.ac.th or https://outlook.office365.com/email.psu.ac.th on your computer
  3. Sign in with your PSU account: username.s@psu.ac.th (staff) or studentID@email.psu.ac.th (students with ID 66 and below) or studentID@psu.ac.th (students with ID 67+)
  4. When prompted for MFA setup, scan the QR code with Microsoft Authenticator
  5. In the app, tap '+' → 'Work or school account' → 'Scan QR code'
  6. Approve the verification request on your mobile device to complete setup

Requirements: Your device must have a lock screen (PIN, fingerprint, or face recognition) enabled. For detailed instructions with screenshots, visit PSU Microsoft Authenticator Guide.

What is ThaID and why do I need it?

ThaID is Thailand's national digital identity system that provides secure online authentication for government and educational services. At PSU, ThaID is required for accessing certain systems and services, including digital certificate issuance. It ensures your identity is verified when accessing sensitive university systems and helps comply with Thailand's digital government initiatives.

I forgot my password. How can I reset it?

To reset passwords for any account linked to your Thai National ID card:

  • Login to PSU Passport using your Thai National ID card (ThaID)
  • Navigate to the password reset section in your account dashboard
  • Select the account you want to reset from your linked accounts
  • Follow the secure verification process to reset your password

This method allows you to reset passwords for PSU Passport, Google Workspace, and other linked accounts using your national ID for identity verification.

My Gmail account is locked. How can I unlock it?

If your Gmail account is locked, you can generate a backup code to regain access:

  1. Login to PSU Passport using your PSU credentials
  2. Navigate to the 'Unlock My Gmail Account' menu option
  3. Click to generate a new 8-digit backup code
  4. Use this backup code when prompted during Gmail login

This secure method allows you to bypass temporary account locks while maintaining security. Contact the office support line for persistent issues, or use the network duty hotline for after-hours help.

Can external visitors connect to PSU WiFi?

External visitors can access PSU WiFi through the One-Day Account system:

  1. Login to PSU Passport using your Thai National ID card (ThaID)
  2. Navigate to the 'One-Day Account' section
  3. Request a temporary account for WiFi access
  4. Use the provided credentials to connect to PSU WiFi networks

This secure method provides controlled access for visitors while maintaining network security. One-day accounts expire automatically after 24 hours.

What's the difference between PSU email accounts and formats?

PSU uses different email formats and systems depending on your role and when you joined:

  • Staff Accounts: All PSU staff use username.s@psu.ac.th format for both email and authentication across all university systems.
  • Student Accounts:
    • • Students with ID starting 67 and above: studentID@psu.ac.th
    • • Students with ID starting 66, 65, 64 and below: studentID@email.psu.ac.th
  • Access Methods:
    • • Microsoft 365/Outlook: http://email.psu.ac.th or https://outlook.office365.com/email.psu.ac.th
    • • Google Workspace: Access through PSU Passport with appropriate authentication

All accounts use the same PSU Passport password but may require different authentication methods (MFA) depending on the service being accessed.

What are digital certificates and PIN codes used for?

Digital certificates at PSU are specifically used for document signing and electronic authentication:

  • Signing official university documents digitally
  • Authenticating electronic signatures on contracts and agreements
  • Providing legal validity to electronically signed documents
  • Complying with Thailand's electronic document laws

The PIN code is used exclusively for security purposes when signing documents. It protects your digital certificate private key and must be entered each time you sign a document. The PIN is separate from your password and provides an additional layer of security for legal document authentication.

I changed my phone or lost my Microsoft Authenticator app. What should I do?

If you change your phone or lose access to Microsoft Authenticator:

  1. Login to PSU Passport using your Thai National ID card (ThaID)
  2. Navigate to the 'Reset MFA' section in your account dashboard
  3. Click the 'Reset Multi-Factor Authentication' button to clear existing MFA settings
  4. On your new device, download and install Microsoft Authenticator
  5. Sign in to your PSU email again and follow the MFA setup process to reconfigure

Important: Ensure your new device has a lock screen enabled (PIN, fingerprint, or face recognition) before setting up the authenticator. This self-service process allows you to securely reset your MFA settings using your national ID verification without contacting IT support.
